It was really a bad day. Mary was late for work and was being warned by her manager again. She went to bed at midnight last night because she had to finish her work. No, actually it was not her task but her colleague’s. After graduating from college last month, she was admitted into a decent company, which made her overjoyed for a week. She had been imagining her sitting in a large and bright office as a white collar.

However, life was totally different. She had to do all the trifle in the office, such as making coffee, copying files, serving all the people in the office. Sometimes, she even had to help others finish their work and she couldn’t refuse for she was a freshman. She was so tired that she even didn’t want to answer the phone call from her boyfriend in another city because he was always complaining and persuading her to come to his city.

Thank god, she finished the work before ten today. She looked around the office and found she was alone. Tired and hungry, she got off the bus. Suddenly, a new billboard at the bus stop attracted her attention. There was a girl sitting on a bench with a book in her hand. It was sort of her dream now to have some free time and enjoy life. This picture made her sad. She couldn’t help taking out a pen and then she drew a large piece of dark cloud and heavy rain on it. It was just like my life now, she thought.

She walked into her apartment. There was some noise coming from her next door which had been vacant for a long time. It seemed she would have a new neighbor. But she was not in the mood of meeting a new neighbor now. All that she wanted to do was to eat, shower and sleep.

Oh, no, she forgot to set the alarm and overslept again. “I am late again! It must be another bad day!” she screamed loudly.

She ran out of her room in a hurry and her another bad day began.

Paragraph 2:

To her amazement, someone had painted a red umbrella for the girl on the billboard.

参考答案

She ran out of her room in a hurry and her another bad day began. She was busy in the office, doing all the trifle as usual. However, she had no idea what she had done during her work. “It was really another bad day.” She thought. She felt frustrated that she couldn’t do what she liked to do. It was so hard to be a freshman. She thought maybe it was time to give up when she got off the bus. Glancing at the billboard, she suddenly couldn’t move her eyes away.

To her amazement, someone had painted a red umbrella for the girl on the billboard. She stared at the picture for a long time. The red umbrella protected the girl from the heavy rain she had drawn before. Her mood changed magically. She felt cheered up by the umbrella which seemed lit up her sky. She walked happily into her apartment and warmly greeted her new neighbor. She began to look forward to the day when she would have a real job in the office. Sometimes, we feel our passion has gone away, but we need to carry on because it’s just a bad day not a bad life.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I watched from a distance as the homeless man quarreled with those who did not leave money for him---the majority.

I walked up to him and right on queue he asked me for a quarter. “I’ll give you a quarter if you tell me your story.” He laughed, “You’ll give me a quarter for my story?” I lay the quarter in front of him and corrected myself ---“Nah, here’s the quarter but it would be nice to hear your story.” I followed his eyes to the quarter and for a brief moment I saw a brighten reflection. I sat down next to him and waited.

“I was in the army,” he said, “I was a sniper (狙击手)and supposed to shoot down the enemy from the distance.” I listened carefully to his rough voice as he went deeper into the story. He told me how he used to hunt with his family and was really good at it. He had his own way of respecting animals by not wasting what he killed for food and not killing more than he needed. When the army came knocking on his door, he felt pride and joined up ---to defend us from the bad guys. He set out to fight in Iraq.

It wasn’t long before he realized his ideals and expectations were just a shadow of the truth. “I was a sniper but I never really killed anyone innocent,” he said. “One day I had to do it. They asked me to shoot this lady from the distance. I saw kids near that lady and my hands were on the trigger. Man, I was tearing up… I couldn’t do it.”

Paragraph 1:

She wasn’t doing anything to anyone and she was with the kids.

Paragraph 2:

The story goes on as he describes eventually being put into prison for 180 days for refusing to follow orders.

参考答案

Paragraph 1:

Happy and excited, the kids seemed to be talking with her. That lady reminded me so much of my own mother who was killed by a reckless man when I was only a little boy. I knew the pain well enough. How could I throw the kids into the misery I once suffered? Meanwhile, my way of respecting lives kept me from shooting such an innocent lady. So, for the first time, I chose not to follow the order. I didn’t pull the trigger.”

Paragraph 2:

180 days later, he was released but was taken off the army. No one would hire him, which soon made him homeless. “Do you regret doing what you have done?” I asked. “No. I would do the same thing if I were given a second chance.” He gave me a determined look. “Man, your story deserves another quarter,” I smiled, “and I feel pride in you.”

At about nine this evening, a lady named Mrs. Humney was robbed and killed. Anyone who can supply any clue is requested to report to the police.” The news made the lonely girl shake with fear. Put your jewelry on the table, and then think over whether I shall be safe to stay up here for the night,” said he. That made Aileen even more terrified, but she tried to calm herself. Anyhow, if she wanted to survive, she needs to do something to save herself.

Just then came the whistle of a police car. Then someone rang the doorbell. The robber (抢劫犯) said with a gun against the girl’s back, “Go to the door and say that you’ve gone to bed.”

“Bull. Is there anything unusual?” asked the policeman Bull. Aileen went to the door, “Oh, Bull, it’s you. Nothing special here. I would invite you inside to have a cup of coffee, but you know, it’s too late today.” Aileen replied, in a calm voice, “I have just gone to bed.” “Oh, sorry to trouble you, dear, we were allotted to observe the surrounding places and protect your safety in this community.” “Thank you, Bull,” she spoke loudly, “And my brother says hello to you.” Aileen added with a trembling voice. After the words “Thank you”, everything became quiet outside. But Aileen’s house was filled with a tense atmosphere. Aileen shook all over, feeling like sitting on pins and needles. She pretended to be calm and wondered whether the police got her meaning.

A few minutes later, the robber threatened Aileen to take out everything valuable immediately. Hearing that, Aileen’s heart beat so violently that she felt nearly suffocated. She was about to go to the bedroom when the glass on the window was broken. The police hurried into the room and caught the robber. “Aileen, you are a clever woman, but I think you need to appreciate this young man,” Bull pointed to a policeman beside him who caught the robber just now, “Your greeting reminded him of the death of your brother last year. So we took action immediately.” Aileen, who was in relief, smiled and gave the young policeman a big hug.

Mr. Huang thought for a while, and finally said, “Li-Li, I will help you solve your problem, but you must listen to me and obey what I tell you.”

Li-Li said, “Yes, Mr. Huang, I will do whatever you tell me to do.” Mr. Huang went into the back room, and returned in a few minutes with a package of herbs.

He told Li-Li, “You can’t use a quick-acting poison to get rid of your mother-in-law, because that would cause people to become suspicious. Therefore, I have given you a number of herbs that will slowly build up poison in her body. Every other day prepare some delicious meal and put a little of these herbs in her serving. Now, in order to make sure that nobody suspects you when she dies, you must be very careful to act very friendly towards her. Don’t argue with her, obey her every wish, and treat her like a queen.

参考答案

    Paragraph 1:

Li-Li was so happy. She thanked Mr. Huang and hurried home. She was too anxious to start her plan of “murdering” her mother-in-law. Every other day, she cooked “especially” delicious food and served them to her as planned. To avoid suspicion, Li-Li tried her best to control her temper, obey her mother-in-law, and treat her like her own mother. Gradually, Li-Li found that her mother-in-law, with whom she used to argue and fight, now seemed much easier to get along with.

   Paragraph 2:

Six months later, Li-Li came to see Mr. Huang and asked for his help again. She begged him to tell her how to prevent the poison from killing her mother-in-law, who had changed to be such a nice woman that she, would not afford to lose. Hearing this, Mr. Huang smiled, saying: “Don’t worry about this. Actually, those herbs I gave you could never build up any poison. On the contrary, they could help to improve her health. In fact, it’s your love and care that washed away those argument and unhappiness between you.” Li-Li smiled in great relief.

A man came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find his 5-year-old son waiting for him at the door.

“Daddy, may I ask you a question?”

“Yeah sure, what is it?” replied the man.

“Daddy, how much do you make an hour?”

“That’s none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?” the man said angrily.

“I just want to know, please tell me, how much do you make an hour?” pleaded the little boy.

“If you must know, I make $20 an hour.”

“Oh,” the little replied, with his head down. Looking up, he said, “Daddy, may I please borrow $10?”

The father was furious, “If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I worked hard every day

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy’s questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money? After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think: maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10

The man went to the door of the little boy’s room and opened the door.

“Are you asleep, son?” he asked.

“No daddy, I’m awake,” replied the boy.

“I’ve been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier,” said the man, “it’s been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you. Here is the $10 you asked for.”

The little boy sat straight up, smiling. “Oh, thank you daddy!” He yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills. The man, seeing that the little boy already had money, started to get angry again. The boy slowly counted out his money, then looked up at his father.

“Why do you want more money if you already have some money?” the father grumbled.

“Because I didn’t have enough, but now I do,” the little boy replied. “Daddy, I have $20 now, please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you.

_________________________________________________________________

参考答案

The father understood why his son asked him that question. It hit him that it was 3 months since he had dinner with his son. Looking at the little boy eager to have dinner with him, he became aware that father’s company was of great importance, especially for a boy whose mother had left. Feeling guilty, he hugged his son tightly, saying softly, “I’m sorry, my son, I was too hard on you just now, and hardly did I spend anytime with you. It’s my fault, but I promise I will have dinner with you every day.” Deeply touched, the boy responded, “thank you daddy! How I wish we could spend every happy day together!”

The next day, they spent $20 in the zoo seeing animals, they enjoyed their day together. For a man devoted to his work wholeheartedly, sparing a whole day for his son is not so easy, but the smile on his son’s face made it all worthwhile. He knew it is his love for his son that is the most significant for him.

She ran out of her room in a hurry and her another bad day began. On the way to the decent company, her boss’ warning echoed in her head. To her surprise, the moment she arrived at the company, she was fired without mercy. Wandering aimlessly in the street, she received a call from her boyfriend who asked for a breakup. No sooner had she hung up did all the memories of their extraordinary love rolled one after another into her mind. Tears running down, Mary screamed desperately, “It can't be a worse day! I was tired of my meager existence!” Exhausted and depressed, she took the bus to her apartment.

To her amazement, someone had painted a red umbrella for the girl on the billboard. Staring at the girl for ten seconds, she came to realize something. “No rain, no rainbow,” she murmured, “There are times when we can’t achieve what we want. Don't let those sad moments weaken us, but turn them into a motivation to inspire us.” The next morning, she sincerely greeted her neighbor in the corridor and even enjoyed the job hunting. As is often the case, a positive attitude really counts!

As a substitute teacher, my daily routine involves driving to a new school almost every day so I’m usually unable to anticipate the day’s events, good or bad!

On one particular day, I was teaching in a very difficult classroom. Some of the schoolboys didn’t finish their homework on time and that really annoyed me. I was managing behavior all morning and by lunch time, I knew I needed coffee to even consider surviving the afternoon. So on my lunch break, I drove to a nearby plaza(购物中心)to get a cup of coffee. There I had a wonderful time and forgot the unpleasant experience in the morning. Upon returning to the car I realized I had locked my keys and my phone inside! I had about 15 minutes to get back to the school which was a good 4 or 5-minute drive away. I contemplated思考)rush back, but it was winter, and I thought a nasty fall on ice would only make the situation much worse.

So I ran into a McDonald’s which was in the same plaza and asked the man at the counter who happened to be the manager to please call me a cab. I briefly explained my situation to him, and I could tell by the look in his eyes, that he empathized. He hurried to the back to use the phone while I paced in the restaurant. I had less than 10 minutes to get back to my school at this point.

The manager returned only to tell me that the cab company had put him on hold and then the line got disconnected, and that he was now on hold again, but had not yet been able to request the cab yet. My expression, I assume, began to resemble some combination of hopelessness and fear.

Without a thought, he grabbed his coat and offered to drive me to the school. I could do nothing but follow him into his car as it was so urgent. On the way, the manager shared his life experiences with me, saying with a smile that he himself once came across a more embarrassing moment. Knowing I was a substitute teacher and that it seemed a bit tough for me to handle my class, he showed sympathy and comforted me with encouraging words, which really warmed my heart. To my amazement, he had tried sorts of odd jobs including being a truck man before he started his restaurant! I was chewing his words when the car pulled up. No sooner had I dashed into the classroom than the bell rang. How lucky! Nothing could express my gratitude to him. Had it not been for him, I would have missed the class.

The manager’s calm behavior and kind nature made me think a lot. When running into a difficult situation, we’re desperate for help from others. The manager is a man who can always light up others’ life during the dark days. Inspired by his kindness, I gathered strength, ready to embrace every possible challenge in life. Yes, surely I will do just that bit extra as well, when I have the chance.

It is cold, on this dark, winter day in 1942. But it is no different from any other day in this Nazi concentration camp. I stand here, hopelessly, still in disbelief that this nightmare is happening. Will I still be alive tomorrow?

Back and forth I walk next to the barbed wire fence. I am hungry. Edible food seems like a dream. Suddenly, I notice a young girl walking past on the other side of the barbed wire. She stops and looks at me with sad eyes. Then she reaches into her pocket, and pulls out a red apple. She looks cautiously to the left and to the right, and then quickly throws the apple over the fence. I run to pick it up, holding it in my trembling, frozen fingers. In my world of death, this apple is an expression of life, of love.

Again, she comes and brings me an apple. For seven months, we meet like this. Sometimes we exchange a few words. Sometimes, just an apple. But she is feeding my soul. And somehow, I know I am feeding hers as well.

One day, I hear frightening news: we are being shipped to another camp. This could mean the end for me and my girl. The next day when I greet her, my heart is breaking. "Do not bring me an apple tomorrow," I tell her. "I am being sent to another camp. We will never see each other again." Turning before I lose all control, I run away from the fence.

Months pass and the nightmare continues. But the memory of this girl sustains me through the terror, the pain, the hopelessness. Over and over in my mind, I see her face, her kind eyes, I hear her gentle words, and I taste those apples.

参考答案

And then one day, the nightmare is over and the war has ended. I survive the hopelessness. I’m free to visit the young girl who stays day and night in my heart. Hardly have I left the camp when I return to the village where we first met, for I can’t wait to see her and express my affection to her. Unfortunately, the girl has gone abroad. Though disappointed, I am determined not to give up.

Years pass. It is 1957. I am a professor of a university. Life is comfortable, but I still remember something painful yet sweet. I know that’s the memory of my angel whom I once loved so much, whom I have never stopped loving. I go to the village again and eventually get in touch with the girl. We exchange words of our life since the day we parted. As we look back, the red apple, an expression of life, of love, is still vivid in our mind. When I make an offer of marriage, she agrees with a bashful smile. Destiny brings us together. The barbed wire fence between us finally disappears.

The books in his schoolbag which was just medium-sized felt like bricks as he ran down the street swiftly. What he desired to do at this moment was to play basketball with his friends, but he was asked to return his sister’s books to the library first by his mother. Even though he was unwilling to accept the requirement, he didn’t want to let his mother down.

He had never set foot in a library before and he wasn’t about to do so today. He would just drop the books in the outside return box. But there was a problem; it was locked.

He went into the building, only a few minutes before closing time. He put the books into the return box the instant he saw it. And after a brief stop in the toilet, he would be on his way to the playground to meet his companions.

He stepped out of the toilet and stopped in surprise — the library lights were all off. The place was empty. The doors had been shut. They couldn’t be opened from the inside; he was trapped— in a library! What an experience!

He attempted to make telephone calls over and over again, but was unable to get through. To make matters worse, the pay phones were on the outside of the building. As the sun began to set, he searched for a light nervously, and fortunately he found it. Eventually, he could see.

He sat in the corner as his head was buried in the arms, filled with annoyance and regret. Had not he accepted the requirement, he wouldn’t have been trapped in the library. But for his mother’s demand, he would be now having fun with his friends who were playing basketball. On thinking of these things, he couldn’t help striking his forehead with clenched fists. It suddenly occurred to him that he could set down something on a piece of paper seeking for help. He wrote on a piece of paper, reading “Help! I am trapped!” and stuck it to the glass door, hoping to be seen by someone passing by.

As time went by, he gradually calmed down and appreciated that this place was not so horrible to stay in. A variety of books stood in the shelves, as if waiting for his inspection. Having selected a book that was related to basketball stars, he attempted to read it, which enabled him to forget his situation temporarily. Now that he had to wait, wandering in the sea of wit seemed to be a terrific choice.
